Finikounda was named after the production of the dye “finikoun”, which in ancient times came from the processing of purple shells.

According to an ancient folk tradition, Koroni took its name from the bronze coin Kourouna, which was found in the area during excavations.
Koroni, with the contrasts of its landscape, today attracts the attention of visitors. The Venetian Castle that dominates the top of a hill, the picturesque cobblestone streets, the two-story mansions and the countless churches give a medieval character to the city. The beautiful harbor full of fishing boats and sailboats, the beautiful light-colored houses with blue or red windows and the gardens blooming with colorful flowers, the narrow whitewashed alleys, the picturesque shops on the pier and the wonderful beaches give a truly island color.

A destination that shares with you the charm, the inspiration, the mystique and the feeling of becoming part of a past moment in history.
Methoni unfolds its history from the Homeric Epics, since it was the city where Agamemnon offered to Achilles to appease his wrath. Among its main attractions, we will see with awe and admiration its imposing castle, one of the most important in Greece, built by the Venetians when they became masters of the city in 1209 AD.
The entire settlement of Methoni has been characterized as traditional. It is one of the first post-revolutionary settlements to be consolidated based on a plan.
It was approved by the governor Ioannis Kapodistrias on May 4, 1829 and is thus the first urban plan for a city in the history of the modern Greek state. Methoni also has a co-educational school, which was one of the first schools built in the newly founded Greece (in March 1830), by decision of Kapodistrias. In Syggrou Square, on the main road, near the entrance to the castle, we find the Venetian well and the elementary school.
The well was constructed in the Second Venetian period (1686-1715) and has a diameter of 2.6 meters and is currently 4 meters deep. This well, along with another one near the bridge at the entrance to Methoni, have been designated as historically preserved monuments, as has the church of Agios Nikolaos as a remarkable example of ecclesiastical architecture from the years after 1830.
